About
Performs routine patient care, support, and services in accordance with the legal scope of practice and within established standards of care, policies, and procedures. Integrates education, technical competence, and patient interaction skills to gain confidence and cooperation from the patient, their family/support group, and other healthcare providers. Exercises sound judgment and develops clinical skills to support the patient's plan of care based on the diagnosis in a timely manner.
Adheres to all local/state/federal regulations, codes, policies, and procedures to ensure privacy and safety to help deliver optimal patient care. May also be responsible for performing specific tasks and/or orienting other staff to the department.
The Emergency Department Technician is a member of the patient care team who performs various tasks and activities to meet patient and department needs consistent with the scope of practice for an unlicensed practitioner. The Emergency Department Technician must manage multiple demands on
His/her time to support the activity of the nursing staff, facilitate the timely flow of patients through the Department and ensure that the department is stocked and ready always to receive and treat patients. Provides basic patient care.

Prerequisites
• The mandatory Jump Start course Human Touch Healthcare™ must be completed.
• This program is part of a bundle for the Emergency Room Technician program, which includes Emergency Medical Technician, EKG Technician, and Phlebotomy.
• Students will need to connect with their coach for program succession.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program, the student will be able to:
- Describe the role(s) of EMS in the healthcare system.
- Demonstrate the professional attributes expected of EMTs.
- Perform the roles and responsibilities of an EMT concerning personal safety and wellness, as well as the safety of others.
- Apply principles of anatomy, pathophysiology, and lifespan development.
- Apply therapeutic communications to the assessment and management of patients.
- Identify the need for and perform immediate lifesaving interventions to manage a patient's airway, breathing, and circulation.
- Assess and manage patients of all ages with various complaints, medical conditions, and traumatic injuries.
Upon completion, the student can sit for the National Registry Certification exam (NREMT) or a State EMT certification.

Total program scholarship award amount: $7000.

Student Cost
- Futuro Health supports the mission to expand the broadest network of healthcare professionals through our generous annual financial support.
- The Futuro Health Scholarship Fund will pay the entire tuition for scholars who enroll in this program in 2023.
- There will be some minimum out-of-pocket expenses for the application and enrollment processes for scholars. Here is a list of these expenses:
- $150 non-refundable application fee for Jump Start coursework and gateway training program.
- $77–$119 Background Check and Drug Screen cost. A one-time background check and drug screen are required for those enrolling in programs that include clinical externships.
- Up-to-date Immunization costs. Current immunizations are required for those enrolling in clinical programs. Some healthcare providers require payment for immunizations, while others may cover the cost with insurance.
For additional optional benefits, students can join SEIU-Healthcare UHW's Justice Division. The monthly fee for this SEIU-UHW membership is $20. Current SEIU-UHW members are exempt from paying this $20 monthly fee.

Work Environment
Ambulance companies and fire departments employ most EMTs. However, EMTs can also work in hospital emergency room settings, dispatch, industrial medicine, and public service. Large events, like concerts, fairs, and festivals also employ EMTs temporarily.
Career Opportunities
The ER Tech is entry-level in the allied health profession. There are various pathways that an individual can take from this role. The general pathway is EMT to Paramedic, often working with county fire, which can lead to the Community Paramedic. This specialized training allows the paramedic to perform various standard practice protocols in the community.
Alternatively, this can lead the pathway into the nursing profession, such as Registered Nursing.
Duties

Day in the Life
An ER Tech aids Doctors and Nurses in ensuring patients receive the necessary care and medical attention during their hospital stay. Throughout their shift, an ER Tech will perform various duties to assist Doctors and Nurses.
You may assess patients, move patients and specimens between units, communicate with patients and their families, resuscitate patients, when necessary, collect blood from patients, and monitor patients. You can execute tasks such as catheter insertion and nasogastric tube placement if you have further certificates.

ALL CLINICAL OR EXTERNSHIPS PROGRAMS
Many providers may require the following immunizations:
• 2 x MMR (measles, mumps & rubella) or titer immunity in the last 3 months;
• 2 x Varicella (chickenpox) or titer immunity in the last 3 months;
• Tetanus within one year.
• 3 x Hepatitis B or titer immunity in the last 3 months.
• A PPD Mantoux test (TB), Blood titer, or chest X-ray showing non-infection is required– Most often, this is not required until nearing your externship start date (typically within 30 days of program start). This is either a one or two-step PPD Mantoux test.
• 2 x COVID-19 (Proof of injections-NOTE: there is a 3-week gap needed between the 1st and 2nd immunization) or possible booster. Students may need COVID boosters prior to the start of their externship.
• Are you willing to complete and provide proof of all immunizations and vaccinations? (Please note that completing immunizations could take up to 6 months for unvaccinated individuals). Yes/ No
• This program requires a full-time clinical externship to complete the program, which may require you to: Coordinate your work and family obligations, as applicable (i.e., childcare, transportation, work schedule, etc.); Have availability up to 40 hours per week until your externship hours are fulfilled; Maintain flexibility to attend externships based on available locations and external site offerings provided to you by your educational provider.
